A hemorrhoid is an enlarged and swollen vein occurring inside, outside or around the anus. There are signs to determine if you have hemorrhoids on your anus: throbbing pain, itching or burning sensation, and protruding soft tissue lump outside your anus. Also, when you see bright red blood on your stool or on the toilet paper, the bleeding might be caused by hemorrhoids. There are home remedies for minor hemorrhoids. Here are some suggestions.
Take a sitz bath or two. Sitz baths are a well-known kind of hydrotherapy and an effective home hemorrhoid cure. By taking sitz baths, the itching and selling go down, without the need for medicines. To do this, you will need a bathtub, or a shallow bucket, or a sitz bath seat. The last among the three is usually plastic, and comes with a solution bag and a tube which continuously feed warm water while in use.
Fill up any of these containers with warm water. After that, sit on them for a minimum of 15 minutes. This can be done three times per day. After each session, do not forget to gently dry the submerged skin with a soft towel so that the affected area will not chafe. You might have heard of sitz baths that have salt in the water used, but do not attempt to do try that for your hemorrhoids. The saline solution can only aggravate your condition.
To reduce pain and swelling, petroleum jelly or zinc oxide paste work well. Choose one and follow usage instructions. Note that you should only use one of these at a time, because their chemicals just might react adversely, burning the skin on and around the anus. Before applying, you need to rinse the area well. Use tap water, and dry with a soft towel or washcloth. Scented materials such as tissue paper, body wash, or soap should not be used, because chemicals within could lead to further irritation. Just dab a small amount on a piece of cotton and apply to the swollen area. Remember to keep the area dry and clean.
Also take a look at your diet. A low fiber diet can cause constipations and ultimately hemorrhoids. Increase your fiber intake with psyllium seeds for better bowel activities. Softer feces minimize the occurrence of hemorrhoids. If you are suffering from constipations, mix one teaspoon of psyllium seeds in a glass of water and drink it during your breakfast. Do this for one week. After that week, drink it during your lunch. Continue drinking the solution in the succeeding weeks thrice a day until your feces becomes softer. No fiber supplements should be taken while you are drinking the psyllium seed solution. Larger feces may result from too much fiber intake.
You can also buy over-the-counter medicines and improve your sitting position. Sitting for extended periods of time should be avoided. This can increase the heat around the anus. Because of the rise in temperature of the surrounding area, chafing, irritation, and swelling may take place.
Other medications you could use are pain relievers and suppositories. The former would lessen the burning sensation. The latter would ease the passing of your stool.
Too much bleeding should call for the assistance of a doctor. In such cases, stop resorting to home remedies to prevent the situation from getting worse.
